For 10,000 sq. ft. of existing turf at 3 lb per 1,000 sq. ft., the exact application requirement is 30 lb. With a 10% allowance, plan for about 33 lb.

The math: Seed needed = (lawn area ÷ 1,000) × application rate. Optional extra seed is added after the exact application quantity is calculated. Full-bag quantity is always rounded up.

Calculator results are estimates, not product-label directions. Seeding rates vary by cultivar, blend, seed coating, germination percentage, lawn condition, and site preparation. Check the seed manufacturer’s label and local recommendations before application.

How much grass seed do you need?

Multiply the lawn area in square feet by the seed-label rate, then divide by 1,000. For example, 10,000 square feet at 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet needs 30 pounds of seed. A 10% purchase allowance brings that to 33 pounds; one 50-pound bag covers that quantity.

New lawn or overseeding?

Overseeding adds seed to existing turf. Starting a new lawn requires the new-lawn rate on your seed label. The two rates are not interchangeable. Measure only the lawn you intend to seed, leaving out buildings, driveways and landscape beds.

Species presets are general planning references, not a recommendation that every listed grass suits your property. Your specific seed label takes priority. You can use a custom rate for your chosen blend.
